Meet The Staff

Partnering with Horses to Empower Humans

John comes to the position of Executive Director as former chair of the Therapeutic Equestrian Center and a service background having served as a Commissioned Officer in the United States Army, President of Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation, and a Director of Government Relations for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NYNEX and Bell Atlantic. He currently serves on the board of the Second Cavalry Association., and chairs the Board of Directors of EverCare, Inc.


Executive Director

Claudia comes to Topfield with a diverse educational background including Advertising & Communications as well as Marketing and Veterinary Technology. Claudia was previously a research professional with 25 years in consumer product goods research and takes this attention to detail and commitment to quality into her work at Topfield as the Facilities Director and Barn Manager. Claudia maintains an orderly and smoothly functioning barn environment as well as providing top quality care for our equines. Having owned horses for 35 years and lived on a horse farm for 20 years, Claudia brings a wealth of knowledge to Topfield.

Alex comes to Topfield Equestrian Center from a varied background with a primary emphasis in Project Management and Process Improvement, having worked at a major bank for 10 years. Alex has always loved animals, particularly horses since her early years.  She rekindled her love for horses as a barn volunteer at Topfield Equestrian Center three years ago.  Since then, she has become enamored with the horses at Topfield and inspired by Topfield’s mission.  She is thrilled to be part of the team that is making a difference for their clients every day.  She lives in Cold Spring with her husband, two kids, 1 huge Goldendoodle, 4 hermit crabs and numerous fish.


Director of Development and Administration

Haley began riding at the age of five, and continued to do so through her early teenage years. After stepping back to focus on art and attending the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, Haley moved back to NY and rediscovered her love of horses and riding. Soon after, she was introduced to the world of therapeutic horsemanship, and fell in love with volunteering and spending time with her students which led her to become a PATH Intl. Certified Riding Instructor in 2018.

Joan comes to Topfield after nearly 15 years as an art instructor for Our Montessori school in Yorktown, NY. Joan holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design and a Master’s degree in education from NYU. Joan spent her youth competing in Hunter/Jumper and Equitation competitions all over the tri-state area. Returning to her first love, Joan is passionate about the care and training of Topfield’s horses to ensure a pleasant experience for our clients.


Barn Assistant

Kaitlyn comes to Topfield with a BA in English from UConn and experience in both journalism and book publishing. While at UConn, she discovered her passion for horses and joined the UConn Equestrian Team. After school, she continued her involvement in the equestrian world by volunteering in therapeutic riding lessons. Now, she works to care for the equines who create such a positive experience for the clients they serve at Topfield, as well as is an assistant instructor in both our ground program and therapeutic riding program.

Louise has been riding and working with horses since the age of 8, and she is currently working toward her Masters degree in clinical social work at Hunter College. She is a longtime believer in the power of therapeutic work with animals. She started at Topfield as a volunteer, and she’s thrilled to collaborate with the horses and people who make a difference in our clients’ lives. 


Barn Assistant, Assistant Instructor

Amber started riding at age 8 and has never stopped. She had groomed and competed in the tri-state area for years until moving to Europe in 1999. She has always been interested in volunteering and helping others and was lucky enough to have had a wonderful experience in Spain working with people of all ages in therapeutic riding for 15 years, eventually having her own little barn of 6 horses and 60+ riders with a fantastic group of instructors and physical and occupational therapists. She has a passion for horses and for the people they help. She is excited to he a part of Topfield and finally feels at home again in the US! 


Assistant Instructor

Astrid is a consultant to Topfield, helping us to maintain the highest of PATH Standards at Topfield,  She has a strong background in teaching therapeutic riding lessons and uses that knowledge to assist in developing Topfield Programming.
Born and raised in Austria amidst “Halflinger Country”,  Astrid grew up with horses, learning Dressage and Hunter Jumping.  Astrid came to the United States at the age of 21 and made it her forever home.  She started volunteering at TEC in 2011 and fell in love with the mission, the horses and the clients. Astrid obtained her certification as a PATH Intl Certified Instructor and EAGALA Certified Equine Specialist in 2014.
